Going through a divorce with minor children is never easy, and it can feel even more overwhelming when the court appoints a Child and Family Investigator (CFI). If you’re facing this situation, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. My name is Charles E. Liken Jr., Esq., and with over 30 years of legal experience, including my role as a Colorado Child and Family Investigator, I’m here to guide you through this process with clarity and confidence.
My legal journey began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Administration of Justice from the University of Pittsburgh in 1995. That early passion for law led me to the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law, where I graduated with a Juris Doctor in 2002. My career kicked off in 1995 as a Legal Intern at the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, supporting trial attorneys and diving into the justice system hands-on. From there, I worked as a Paralegal, managing cases independently, and later as a Civil/Criminal Investigator in Denver, conducting over 700 felony investigations. These roles taught me how to investigate thoroughly and advocate effectively—skills I now bring to every client.
After serving as a Deputy District Attorney in Southern Colorado and a Senior Managing Attorney at a boutique firm, I’ve returned to running my own practice, The Longmont Law Firm, LLC, in Longmont, Colorado, as of January 2025. I’ve spent over 22 years specializing in Family Law, including pre- and post-divorce matters.
A CFI is a neutral professional appointed by the court to investigate and recommend what’s best for your children—like parenting time and decision-making responsibilities. Under Colorado’s Chief Justice Directive 04-08, their job is to dig into your family’s situation, interview key people (you, your ex, your kids, and others), visit homes, and write a report for the judge. The focus? Always the “best interests of the child.” As a CFI myself, I’ve done this work firsthand, so I know exactly what they’re looking for and how their recommendations can shape your case.
When the court appoints a CFI, it’s often because there’s a dispute—like disagreements over custody or concerns about safety. With my extensive background, I can help you in ways many other attorneys can’t:
As a CFI, I’ve written those reports and testified in court, so I understand the weight they carry. I’ve also seen the limits: CFIs can’t provide therapy or change roles mid-case (CJD 04-08, Standard 4). This dual perspective—as both an attorney and a CFI—lets me anticipate what’s coming and tailor a strategy that protects your kids and your interests. At The Longmont Law Firm, LLC, “Where Integrity Thrives,” I’ve streamlined processes to make this stressful time easier for you.
Divorce is tough, but a CFI’s involvement doesn’t have to be a mystery. My career—from prosecutor to investigator to family law attorney—has been about serving justice with integrity. I’ve received the Denise Stott Award for leadership and community involvement, and I bring that commitment to every client. Let me help you navigate this process, one step at a time, so you can focus on what matters most: your kids. For more on CFI rules, see CJD 04-08 from the Colorado Judicial Branch—it’s the playbook I know.
You don’t have to switch attorneys to get my help. If you’re happy with your current lawyer, The Longmont Law Firm, LLC can step in as a second opinion or co-counsel, specifically focusing on the CFI process. My unique experience as a CFI means I can collaborate with your attorney, offering insights and strategies to strengthen your case without disrupting what you’ve already built. Together, we can ensure you’re fully prepared and supported—keeping your kids’ best interests front and center. Contact me today, and let’s discuss how I can complement your team.
